about

Last year, I recorded over 10 hours of music designed to accompany my dog while she sleeps. The idea came from seeing a litany of "ambient music for dogs" playlist mixes on YouTube. After playing those for a few weeks, I thought to try doing it myself for a more personal touch. These are all excerpts from the longer set that I loop for her on my laptop, and focus on the most subdued portions.

In terms of process, the songs are in major keys - nothing too ominous or dark - and begin with more defined attack and clearer instrumentation. They gradually fade over time into more obscured washes of reverberation, with more time between notes and elongated attack envelopes. Everything was recorded to tape for a more degraded effect (and since many of the YouTube playlists sound extremely "hi fi" with cheesy synthetic strings, I wanted to avoid making anything too crystalline).

It's meant to be played extremely quietly and is more or less "optimized" for small speakers. I play these through a laptop or phone next to her bed.

In other words - don't take it too seriously :)
